About the Directorate

The Directorate aims to contribute to scaling up the level of occupational safety and health in Jordan to ensure the provision of a healthy, safe and decent work environment free from work injuries and accidents and with high productivity for workers in all sectors and professions by raising awareness and compliance with standards and best practices related to occupational safety and health in a manner that guarantees rights of the labour by creating an integrated system of standards, policies and supervisory instrument in accordance with a participatory approach with the concerned official institutions, the private sector and social partners in order to build a positive occupational safety and health culture at the national level.

The organizational structure of the Directorate



The most important functions of the Occupational Safety and Health Directorate:

  1. Supervising all works related to the provision of a healthy and safe work environment free of accidents and injuries, and attractive in private sector institutions, beside the preservation and maintenance of labor rights through inspection and follow-up to the extent of implementation of labor law legislation with regard to occupational safety and health (regulations, instructions and resolutions issued under the law).
  2. Preparing programs and supervising the provision of advice to private sector institutions and labour to raise awareness of the Labor Law related to occupational safety and health.
  3. Cooperating with all authorities concerned with occupational safety and health (represented by private institutions and authorities of employers and labour) in all fields to ensure unification of efforts and access to safe work environments free from the causes of accidents and injuries.
  4. Providing advice to decision makers on all matters related to occupational safety and health at the national level.
  5. Participate in developing of standards, and drafting, amending, and developing legislation related to occupational safety and health in coordination with the concerned authorities.
  6. Launching awareness and educational campaigns in the field of occupational safety and health in cooperation with representatives of employers and labour.


The most important functions of the Occupational Safety and Health Inspection Department

  1. Inspecting the various work sites, in cooperation and coordination with the labor inspection directorates in the center and the field, to find out the sources of risk that may result in labour accidents and injuries, and directing the institutions to a mechanism for implementing and adhering to the provisions of the Jordanian Labor Law and taking the necessary legal procedures in this regard.
  2. Receiving inquiries and providing advice in the field of occupational safety and health.
  3. Resolving labor complaints related to occupational safety and health requirements.
  4. Conducting measurements of work environment pollutants and preparing reports in this regard through the safety specialists of the Directorate, and providing solutions and recommendations that would raise the level of labour conditions.
  5. Periodic reviewing the legislation related to occupational safety and health, in consultation with the concerned authorities.
  6. Issuing periodic reports on the status of occupational safety and health in the Kingdom, including achievement reports for the Directorate.
  7. Issuing publications and awareness materials on occupational safety and health.
  8. Participating in the committees related to occupational safety and health inside and outside the Ministry.
  9. Implementing awareness, guidance and inspection activities and campaigns, related to occupational safety and health.

The most important functions of the Work Accidents and Injuries Department

  1. Investigating work accidents and injuries and designing solutions to prevent their recurrence.
  2. Calculating compensation in cases of work injuries for those who are not subject to the provisions of social security stipulated in the Jordanian Labor Law.
  3. Transferring the injured workers who are not subject to the provisions of social security in cases where they are exposed to the termination of services under the provisions of the Jordanian Labor Law to the medical reference to indicate the extent of their ability to work and to estimate the percentages of disability.
  4. Evaluating different work environments based on the sector and the degree of risk, and issuing specialized reports in this regard.
  5. Resolving labor complaints and disputes related to work accidents and injuries.
  6. Participating in training and rehabilitation of those concerned with safety (workers, employers, safety supervisors) in cooperation with the concerned authorities.
  7. Implementing the awareness, guidance and inspection activities and campaigns related to occupational safety and health.

The most important functions of the Occupational Safety and Health Approvals Department:

  1. Developing the annual plans necessary for the implementation of the work to ensure achievement of the objectives of the Directorate and in line with the objectives of the Ministry.
  2. Issuing accreditations for occupational safety and health cadres and safety committees for institutions in accordance with the requirements of the Jordanian Labor Law.
  3. Issuing approvals for the affiliation of occupational safety and health supervisors to accreditation courses for occupational safety and health supervisors in accordance with the requirements of the Jordanian Labor Law.
  4. Issuing accreditations for medical staff for institutions according to the requirements of the Jordanian Labor Law.
  5. Periodic reviewing the legislation related to occupational safety and health, in consultation with the concerned authorities.
  6. Issuing periodic reports on the status of occupational safety and health in the Kingdom, including achievement reports for the Directorate.
  7. Participating in committees related to occupational safety and health inside and outside the Ministry.
