Minister of Labour: New investment for a closure-threatened textile factory in Karak has been concluded following several months endeavor to preserve 700 current work jobs and create new job opportunities.


Minister of Labour Nayef Isteitieh confirmed today Tuesday in Karak that an agreement has been reached concerning a closure-threatened textile factorytoattract new investment replacing current investor and preserving all 700 workers and creating new job opportunities.

The Minister stated that the Ministry has been for several months looking to attract a new investment for this factory to keep its workers and create new job opportunities.

He noted that the agreement included clauses that give all workers a month-salary per each year of work and one month notice salary, in addition to two-month salaries, leave allowance and other work rights to include experience certificate as stipulated in the Labour Law, noting that Labour Law stipulates that the worker shall enjoy half month salary per every year of work, two months minimum if the worker was terminated arbitrarily.

The Minister further noted that the new investor is ready to contract immediately workers that concur with clauses of the agreement. They are requested to contact with Karak Labour Directorate of communicate through MOL webpage before 20 Aug. 2022.

He added that the new investor shall absorb 549 current workers with same wages, work conditions and renewable work contracts. Remaining workers’ job descriptions work conditions and wages will be negotiated.

Isteitieh noted that MOL had exerted huge efforts during the past months to look for new investor for this factory replacing the current investor. MOL supervised extensive and lengthy negotiations to reach an agreement approved by all parties, based on its keenness to ensure continuity of work, non-closure of factory, and preservation of most workers and their rights.

The Minister stated that the factory was negatively affected due to coronavirus epidemic during the past two years. The textile and clothing sector was one of the main severely affected sectors due to productivity retreat, and became unable to continue. MOL was obligated to intervene quickly to look for a new investor that keeps workers and safeguard investor’s rights.

Isteitieh informed workers’ representatives on details of agreement. He met them a week ago and received a list of their demands which later was delivered to the new investor. He confirmed that the appropriate decision shall be taken that satisfies all parties.

He noted that the Ministry is keen to connect employers and jobseekers, improve work conditions and environment, and achieve decent work at the private sector. He reiterated that decent work environment increases attraction of Jordanian workers to this sector.
